Dussehra Festival

Dussehra is also celebrated on a large scale in Bangladesh and Nepal too and is famously known as 'Vijayadashmi'. In Nepal, it is the largest festival and culminates after the nine days Navratri festival. Not only do Hindus celebrate it with great zeal and enthusiasm but also it is quite famous amongst Non-Hindus as well. In 2019, it will fall on October 8. This day marks the beginning of the harvest season in India and the 'mother earth' is invoked to reactivate the vigour and fertility in the soil. All this is done by performing rituals and religious activities on the day of Vijayadashmi. It is believed that the rituals and customs invoke cosmic forces that lead to the rejuvenation of the soil.
Whereas in Bangladesh, Dussehra is a five day long celebration and great 'mandaps' or congregations are setup for these special days. Amongst all the celebrations of Dussehra, the largest one takes place in Dhaka at the Dhakeshwari temple. On the final day of Dasha-hara (dussehra) large clay idols of goddess Durga are submerged in rivers (running water). Turmeric is widely used for performing the rituals.

Legend Behind Dussehra :
The festival is celebrated in the remembrance of victory of Good over Evil as it is the day when Lord Ram killed the Demon Ravana. Demon Ravana had kidnapped the Lord Ram's beloved wife Sita and held her captive in his kingdom of Lanka, to win Sita's love but the devoted wife Sita suffered all tortures of Demon Ravana bravely and waited for Lord Ram.Lord Ram had performed the Chandi Homam and invoked the blessings of Goddess Durga, who blessed him with secret knowledge of the way to kill Ravana. Lord Ram, his brother Lakshman, their follower Lord Hanuman and the monkeys fought a great battle to rescue Sita. The war lasted for 10 days and on the day of Ashwin Shukla Dashmi, Lord Ram and his team found Goddess Sita and defeated the Demon Ravana. The glorious victory of Lord Ram was celebrated with great happiness, which continues to be followed till date in the form of Dussehra.

Celebration of Dussehra
The festivals Dussehra is considered a most auspicious day and people belief that if any new venture is started on this day, it is bound to be successful. Hence, all the foundation of a new building, opening of a new commercial establishment or even initiating a child into the world of learning- is started on this day. Also on this day implements of agriculture, manufacturer's machines etc.
Dussehra falling on the last day of Navaratri or Durga puja arrives in the month of October. Dussehra literally means that which takes away ten sins. This Hindu festival is celebrated all over India to mark the defeat of Ravana by Lord Rama. Dussehra symbolises the triumph of good over evil. The "Ramlila" - a performing of the life of Lord Rama, is held during the nine days preceding Dussehra. On the tenth day, larger than life effigies of Ravana, his son and brother -Meghnath and Kumbhakarna, are set alight.
Ram Lila is generally held in the evenings, and year after year, people flock in huge numbers to watch the story unfold, yet once again. In ancient times when it was considered demeaning for women to go up on stage, men performed the female roles. This still happens in most parts of India.
