Imphal is the capital city of the Indian state of Manipur. Ruins of the Palace of Kangla, the royal seat of the erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur, are in the city centre, surrounded by a moat.
A city that is culturally rich and generously gifted with nature, Imphal in Manipur is one of the most beautiful parts of our country. Though torn with strife and curfews, Imphal is one of those rare places where the risk is completely worth it. Green valleys dip between densely carpeted hills while the clouds play hide and seek behind them. Look closer and you’ll see that the hills are dotted with small, red-roofed houses so characteristic of hill stations. Walk into the populated areas and watch as the locals, dressed in their traditional garb, entertain you with their folk songs and dance. The warmth of the people and the taste of the food will ensure you’ll never want to leave.
Imphal used to be the capital of the erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur, and the ruins of the palace surrounded by its protective moat are still located at the city center. When the British took over the city, they tore down the palace and the fort, and today, locals and visitors make do with the remnants.
