Pulwama Tourism

Pulwama, a beautiful district in Jammu & Kashmir, is also known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Kashmir’. The district comprises of 323 villages, which are grouped in 5 tehsils namely, Awantipora, Shopian, Pulwama, Tral, and Pampore. Situated at a distance of about 40 km from Srinagar, Pulwama got the status of the district in 1979. Pulwama was earlier known by the name of Panwangam that was later renamed to Pulgam.The district of Pulwama was ruled by the Kashmir Sultanate from 1346 to 1586 A.D. The Mughal rulers came here in the 16th century, and during the early 19th century, the Afghans began to rule the region.

The Payer Temple, the Avantishwar Temple, the Shrine of Shah Hamdan and the Shrine of Syed Hassan Mantaqui are the popular religious sites located in the district. Moreover, Jama Masjid Shopian and Asar Sharief Pinjoora are also famous religious centres in Pulwama.
