Sasaram Tourism

Sasaram in Rohtas district of Bihar is a small town, 148 km from Patna. Traditionally it is believed to be named after , the sage Parashurama and the legendary King Sahatrabahu. Sasaram was also the birth place of Sher Shah Suri, who ruled Delhi from 1540 to 1545 AD. It is well known for the mausoleums built during his regime. The Grand Trunk road, the most notable feature of Sher Shah Suri’s achievements, goes through Sasaram. The place is notably sought after for the beautifully sculpted tombs of Sher Shah Suri, his father and the architect who designed the monuments. These historic structures stand as mute testaments of the glory of a bygone era.

The name of the town Sasaram has been derived from the names of the famous king named Kartavirya Sahasrarjuna and also Parashurama, a sage. One of the popular attractions of Sasaram is the Samrat Ashoka Pillar. In the cave situated in the Kaimur Hill, this pillar is located. Another crowd puller of the town is the Rohtaas Fort. The celebrated king named Raja Harish Chandra constructed and gave the name of the fort; however, later on, Sher Shah Suri captured the fort and established power over it. Sher Shah Suri was a famous Afghan Ruler.

Under the Sharqi Empire of Jaunpur, Sasaram was turned into a major business hub as well as a thriving administrative body by Sher Shah Suri. The magnificent and wonderful history, customs and traditions of the past time period are reflected on the numerous memorials and structures that were constructed in Sasaram. The place is also famous since Haji Begum, Jhansi ki Rani, was born here.
