Varah Temple in Pushkar

The Varaha Temple is an ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu Varaha Avatar a Wild boar incarnation of third Avatar in the Dashavatar of Satya Yuga is located in Pushkar of Rajasthan. The Varaha temple was built in 12th century by King Anaji Chauhan and later temple was destroyed by the Emperor Aurangzeb in the year of 1727 and again reconstructed by Raja Sawai Man Singh of Jaipur.

This is a rare temple of Lord Varaha and important temple in the ancient age. The temple house the big idol of the lord Varah painted in white. The well crafted and colorful temple of Lord Vishnu depicts all his Avatars.

Epic stated, The Demon Hiranyaksha has carried the Earth and went under the Cosmic Ocean. The Lord Vishnu has appeared as Wild Boar with two tusks to rescue the planet Earth from the demon Hiranyaksha and fought with him for thousands of years and brought back the Earth holding between the two tusks and restored it in the Universe in original position.

History
The original Varaha Temple was built in Pushkar during the reign of King Anaji Chauhan (1130-1150 A.D.), who was the grandfather of King Prithviraj Chauhan. It was destroyed by the Ghaznavid army under Arnoraja during that time. The temple was first rebuilt by the Hada Chatrasal of Bundi and was again destroyed by Aurangzeb. It was rebuilt in 1727 by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur. To this day, the ruins of stone lintels, carvings and broken architectural ornaments lie strewn about the temple compound. The temple was again renovated in 1806 by Gokul Chand Parikh, a Scindia minister.

Pushkar Tourist Attractions

Pushkar an important pilgrimage centre is a puny village close to Ajmer near the desert and Nag Pahar Mountains. There is the Pushkar Lake and several bathing ghats for Hindu rituals. Pushkar Cattle Fair is held here annually in the month of October-November. The place has 400 big and small temples.

Malpua a sweet dish is liberally served here. It is prepared from flour cow’s milk butter and sugar. It is like a sweet chapatti with holes. Dal baati churma and Lassi is very popular. Vikas Handicraft has given a touch of Rajasthan to the paper made gift items for home and office use. It is a good place to shop. Incense sticks have pleasant smell. Pushkar markets are well maintained based on tourist demands and sell ethnic attire and things of western taste.

Pushkar is well connected by road to other parts of India. Ajmer 11 km away is the closest railway station and Jaipur 130 km away is the nearest airport.
