Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela is the most important Hindu spiritual gathering in India that comes once every three years, rotating between four major Hindu pilgrim centers of India - Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. The Maha (Grand) Kumbh is held every 12th year in each of the following four locations. 2007 Maha Kumbh Mela is scheduled to be held at Nashik in Maharastra. In Maharashtra, the festival is held in Trimbakeshwar, Nashik. The Nashik Kumbh Mela is generally considered to be the most sacred of all the festivals. Kumb Mela in Nashik, like other fairs is also a mammoth affair attending by nearly three and a half million pilgrims. Thousands of sadhus and holy men and millions of pilgrims take dip in the holy Ramkund and Kushavarta reservoirs.

August 14th and 25th and September 8th and 20th are regarded to be the peak of the festival days. Residential arrangement for Sadhus is made in Tapobhumi called Tapovan on left bank of Godavari river. History
The Maha (great) Kumbh Mela is celebrated after 12 'Purna Kumbh Melas' or 144 years and is held at Prayagraj (Allahabad). The Purna (complete) Kumbh is celebrated every 12 years at four places Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. The Ardh (Half) Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 6 years at Haridwar and Allahabad. The Maha Kumbh Mela has a compelling influence over the Indians as it is the largest human gathering in history for a same cause on a single day irrespective of any worldly barriers of caste, creed, color and religion.

It's a once in a lifetime experience witnessing millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world come together in this spectacle of Faith. This festival witnesses the ritual bathing in sacred water saturated with flower, incense and fragrance amidst chanting of Vedic hymns and mantras. It is believed to liberate one from all miseries and suffering of life. The ceremonial dip in the Holy River is an important ritual and it is believed that bathing on the auspicious days cleanses one of all sins and achieves Moksha (liberation from the cycle of life, death and rebirth).

The Khuldabad Urs is a festival for Muslims; celebrated for five days. Mount Mary Festival, which is held every year at Bandra, Mumbai attracts huge crowds of the city. The Snake festival at Battis Shirala town too attracts large number of tourists from India and aboard.
