Hosapete, also known as Hospet, is a city in Ballari District in central Karnataka, India. It is located on the Tungabhadra River, 12 km from Hampi. Hampi is a World Heritage site containing the ruins of the medieval city of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The throne of Vijayanagar Kingdom in its bygone era, Hospet receives fame from Hampi, capital city of the Vijayanagar Kings. Sprawled over an area of about 28.39 sq km, Hospet was constructed by Krishna Deva Raya, one of the former rulers of Vijayanagar. Earlier named as Nagalambika, the city got a new name from its natives, which is Hospet. The name was discovered from the local language and brings out the meaning 'New City'.
