Sakleshpur is a hill station in the Western Ghats mountain range, in India’s Karnataka state. It’s surrounded by slopes covered with tea, coffee and spice plantations. The 18th-century, star-shaped Manjarabad Fort has sweeping mountain views. Trails lead to biodiverse Bisle Reserve Forest, home to cobras, deer and birds. To the northeast, Jenukallu Gudda peak offers vistas stretching as far as the Arabian Sea.
Sakleshwar was under the rule of the Mysore kings. Before that it had seen the reign of the Hoysalas as well as the Chalukyas. It was during the time of the Hoysalas that the town received its name. Legends claim that the Hoysalas found a broken Shiva Linga when they arrived in the little town and promptly named it Sakleshwar. However, some locals claim that the town was so-named because it was extremely wealthy in terms of agricultural output. Sakleshwar has a rich biodiversity and one of the popular activities for tourists is trekking. The Bisle reserve forest trek as well as the Kumara Parvatha trek can be rewarding for they give a glimpse into the varied ecology of the area. Even if you are not an enthusiastic trekker, a walk around the picturesque town can be very rewarding.
Karnataka is a complete package for tourists wishing to explore many worlds at one place. The history of this state can be traced back to antiquity and the monuments that are housed here from that era, narrate a thousand tales of the bygone times. Hampi, Halebid, Bangalore, Shravanbelagola, and Mysore are the topmost attractions of this place.
