Bhartrihari Temple shrine is devoted to Bhartrihari Baba who was said to possess saintly powers. He performed a number of miracles here at this temple. Most famous, his water offering and the building of the temple itself: it’s said that he buried himself alive underneath. A great place to visit. On the way from main road, there are many temples leading upto the main Bhartri temple complex. Bhartrihari Temple is located quite close to Sariska National Park and is about one hour drive from Alwar city.
Bhartrihari Baba left his kingdom to become a saint. Several years later, he went to his wife and asked her something to eat in the form of alms. He became immortal by eating the fruit given by his wife. Devotees believe that Bhartrihari Baba was gifted with saintly powers. He once prayed to God for many years to bring water to the city that experienced acute shortage of water in those days. God was so pleased with his prayers that a stream of water emerged from a rock. It is also believed that Bhartrihari Baba buried himself alive and the temple is built on his grave.
The Bhartrihari Temple is located very close to the world famous Sariska National Park. One can reach the temple very easily by a private or hired car that is easily available from the city. It takes nearly one hour to reach the temple from Alwar.
History of Bhartrihari Temple
Legend has it that Bhartrihari Baba buried himself alive and this temple was built on his grave. It is believed Maharaj Bhartrihari was a ruler of Ujjain, who gave up his kingdom and worldly pleasures to become a Nath and a follower of Guru Gorakhnath. Several years later, he returned to his wife and asked for something to eat or bhiksha. His wife gave him a fruit to eat, after which he turned immortal. Some believe that Bhartrihari had saintly powers and can cure even the most fatal of diseases. He once prayed to God to bring water to the city that suffered from a severe drought. God became so pleased with him that he accepted his prayers and a small stream of water started flowing from a nearby rock.
