Mamit District is situated in the western part of Mizoram.The district is bounded on the north by Hailakandi district of Assam state, on the west by North Tripura district of Tripurastate and Bangladesh, on the south by Lunglei district and on the east by Kolasib and Aizawl districts. Mamit district was selected for Multi-Sectoral Development Plan for Minority concentrated districts. In 1985 Mamit district became home to Dampa Tiger Reserve, which has an area of 500 km² The district has 3 legislative assembly constituencies. These are Hachhek, Dampa and Mamit.
Mamit is a lesser known district in the Mizoram state which has a voluminous jungle with huge trees growing very close to each other. Blessed with a temperate climate this mystic place has huge mountains engulfing it and is made fertile by five flowing rivers. Bamboo and Timber are the main forest products.
Dampa forest which was declared as a Tiger Reserve in the year 1994 is the top attraction. Bounding an area of about 550 sq km, the reserve is mainly concerned with preserving the tiger population and save them from being hunted down by the poachers. Giant Squirrel, sambar, leopard, jungle cat, wild boar and macaques are the prime inmates of the reserve.
Pukzing has the largest cave and also Lungkulh lake and Kanghmun village are the places visited by most of the tourists.
Taxis and buses are available to Mamit from the nearby place called Silchar. It also has a railway station.
